Who invited a dentist to the burn unit?
In July of 2019, my then 10-year-old son Scott received burns to 48% TBS from a fuel tank explosion. Our time in the Arizona Burn Center changed our family forever. The level of care that we received was far more than just dressing changes and pain management. We were the recipients of compassion beyond our expectations.
As a dentist, it changed the way I view my patients. I care about them, not just for them. More importantly, this experience opened my eyes to the importance of my relationships with my loved ones and everyone God puts in my path. I sold my pediatric dental clinic and began working at the hospital where the burn center is located.
I am continually inspired by the burn team's commitment to providing such great care in the face of very difficult circumstances. To me, these appliances are more than just another “mouth splint”. They are part of my family's continued healing process. They're our way of giving back to those who helped us. They are the most sincere and genuine way I can say thank you to every burn team—especially my sons.
